SRINAGAR: The Administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh has prohibited the procurement, distribution, sale, marketing and use of chemical or synthetic fertilisers for agricultural purposes across the Union Territory, as part of its drive to develop Ladakh into a certified organic region.
According to an official government order, the ban has been imposed in view of Ladakh’s unique agro-ecological conditions, traditional farming practices and low dependence on agrochemicals.
The order said the Union Territory Administration has been actively promoting organic agriculture and has now prohibited the procurement, distribution, sale, marketing and use of chemical and synthetic fertilisers for agricultural practices across Ladakh.
The Administration said the decision is aimed at achieving the objective of developing Ladakh as a certified organic region while preserving its ecological sustainability and traditional farming systems.
