Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena, has approved the project, which will be executed by the Sindhu Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (SIDCO). The shelters are inspired by traditional Ladakhi Gonpas and will incorporate local design elements such as Shingtsak woodwork, mural art, prayer wheels, mud plastering, lime whitewashing, and decorative finishes.

The existing bus stops in Leh currently lack adequate shelter, seating, and protection from extreme weather conditions. The new infrastructure aims to address these shortcomings by providing safe, comfortable, and weather-resistant waiting spaces for commuters.

Each smart bus shelter will be equipped with advanced Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and ICT-enabled facilities, including 55-inch passenger information display systems, secondary LED boards, GPS-based real-time bus tracking, cloud-based ETA updates, Wi-Fi connectivity, CCTV surveillance, and SOS emergency response buttons.

Passenger amenities will also include heated seating, mobile and laptop charging points, first aid kits, emergency oxygen cylinders, fire safety systems, tactile flooring for visually impaired users, and wind-protected enclosures. The shelters will further feature 2 kWp solar photovoltaic systems with battery storage and hybrid inverters, supported by grid connectivity to promote clean energy use and reduce carbon emissions.

The project, conceptualised by the Lieutenant Governor, was designed in response to the growing need for improved public transport infrastructure in Leh, a key tourist destination and regional hub. The detailed project report was prepared on his directions.

According to the LG, the initiative aims to modernise public transport infrastructure while preserving Ladakh’s cultural identity, making it both climate-resilient and passenger-friendly, particularly during harsh winter conditions when temperatures fall well below freezing.

The project is expected to improve commuter convenience, encourage greater use of public transport, and promote sustainable urban mobility in the high-altitude region.
