SRINAGAR: Ladakh Police have detained an alleged drug peddler under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act and seized an SUV allegedly used in the transportation of narcotics, officials said on Monday.
The action marks a major step in the Union Territory’s campaign against drug trafficking and forms part of Ladakh Police’s anti-drug drive under the Nasha Mukt Abhiyan, officials said.
Zahid Hussain, a resident of Ranbirpora village in Leh, was detained under the PIT-NDPS Act on the basis of a dossier citing his alleged repeated involvement in narcotics-related FIRs, a police spokesperson said.
He has subsequently been lodged in jail, the spokesperson added.
In a separate action, police seized a Sports Utility Vehicle belonging to Tsering Nurbo, who was recently booked in a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in Leh.
According to the police spokesperson, the vehicle was allegedly being used to transport narcotic substances.
The actions are part of Ladakh Police’s intensified campaign against drug-related crime under the leadership of Director General of Police Anand Jain, officials said.
