A complete shutdown is being observed in Lal Chowk and its adjacent areas in Srinagar on Monday to commemorate the 29th death anniversary of victims of Gawkadal massacre.

The shutdown call has been issued by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik to commemorate the victims of the massacre.

All the shops and other business establishments are closed in the city centre. However, public transport was plying normally.

On January 21, 1990, at least fifty civilians were killed after CRPF personnel opened fire at a procession heading towards Chotta Bazar area of Karan Nagar.
