Srinagar

The Srinagar-Jammu highway was blocked on Friday due to landslides, triggered by heavy rains in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir.

An official said that huge boulders came rolling down from a hilltop on the highway blocking the movement of vehicles on the strategic highway that connects Kashmir with the rest of the world.

“This precaution has been taken keeping the safety of the travellers in mind,” the official added.

Men and machinery have been pressed into service to restore the movement of traffic on the highway, he said.

Official sources said that hundreds of vehicles, including trucks, are stranded at different places on the highway.

“By the time vehicles carrying Amarnath pilgrims reach Ramban we expect the road will be open for traffic,” they said.
