On the instructions of Party Working President \Omar Abdullah, National Conference General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar on Monday conducted an extensive tour of Poonch and met those families which have been affected by the shelling on the LOC. The NC General Secretary met the relatives of those victims who have lost their lives and extended the condolence on behalf of the party and prayed for peace to the departed souls, a party statement said this evening.

“I have conducted an extensive tour of those areas in Poonch that have been badly hit because of the shelling from across the LOC. I also visited the bereaved families and expressed the solidarity on behalf of the party. The victims should be given immediate ex-gratia compensation and the injured should be compensated and their best possible medical treatment should be ensured,” the NC General Secretary said.

The NC General Secretary also lashed out at the State Government for their lapses and said the Administration was virtually missing from the ground. “NC President Dr Farooq Abdullah had conducted an extensive tour of these areas a couple of weeks ago to boost the morale of the locals who are reeling under constant fear and anxiety. Sadly, despite their pleas for help being flagged by our party, the State Government took no action to move vulnerable people to safer areas. No safe shelters were identified and no assessment tours were conducted in these areas despite weeks of heavy shelling,” Sagar said.

“Whenever there were incidents of shelling on the LOC during the tenure of the previous NC-led Government, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah himself rushed to the affected areas and oversaw eviction and safety operations that the Administration was ordered to carry on. Safe shelters were identified and vulnerable people shifted there to prevent any loss of lives. This time around its astounding to see how the Government is completely missing from Poonch. There is absolutely no sign of the Government. The State Government, after public outcry, has no rushed some of its representatives to the area for photo-ops and whirlwind VIP tours. The people are suffering the indifference of the Mufti led Government,” the NC General Secretary said.

The NC General Secretary expressed solidarity with the affected people and also demanded that the State Government ensures the safety of people along the LOC.
