Local boy’s mysterious death triggers clashes between two Budgam villages

Three days after the body of Sameer Ahmad, a resident of Watkalu village in Budgam was fished out from Yusmarg reservoir, his relatives, around ninety in numbers, started vandalizing the property of a local girl, who according to them had an affair with the deceased. Sameer’s relatives allege that he was killed by the girl’s brothers. Sameer was missing since June 24, 2017. His father filed a missing report three days later. His body was fished out on July 10.

As Sameer’s relatives reached girls house and started vandalizing their house, personnel from local police reached the spot trying to contain the situation. In order to disperse Sameer’s angry relatives’ police had to use tear smoke shells leading to clashes in the area.

The official said that when police tried to stop them they resisted, triggering clashes.

The official added that latest reports suggest that around hundred inhabitants Watkalu including relatives of deceased Sameer arrived at Dadukhatu village of Chraresharief and torched two houses and a one cowshed belonging to the father of the girl. Latest reports suggest that an orchard belonging to the girl’s family has been damaged too.

Meanwhile, clashes between the police and people were going on when this report was filed.
