SRINAGAR: A major tragedy was averted on Tuesday after a tyre of an LPG tanker caught fire on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway near Chanderkote in Ramban district, officials said.
The tanker was travelling from Jammu towards Srinagar when one of its tyres caught fire, triggering an immediate response from local residents, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and the Fire and Emergency Services, they said.
The fire was brought under control before the flames could spread to the LPG tanker, preventing a potentially serious incident, officials said.
Traffic on the highway was briefly disrupted during the firefighting operation but was restored after the situation was brought under control.
No casualties were reported and the tanker suffered no damage, officials added.
