As the polling for the third phase of Lok Sabha election is underway, the district Anantnag in south Kashmir recorded 6 .5% votes till 11: 00 am.
The highest votes were cast in Pahalgam 8750 (10.1%), followed by Dooru 7538 (9 .6%), Kokernag was at 8945 (9.5%), 6790 (7.7%) votes were cast in Shangus, main town Anantnag registered 1318 (1.5%) votes and the lowest turnout was witnessed in Bijbehara 863 (0.9%) till 11: 00 am. The overall percentage was 6.5 per cent.
Keeping in view the sensitivity of the district, the Election Commission has reduced the polling duration by two hours in the constituency. Elections will be held in Anantnag from 7 am to 4 pm, instead of till 6 pm, which is the standard voting deadline.
Baramulla and Jammu went to the polls on April 11, followed by Srinagar and Udhampur on April 18. Ladakh will go to the polls on May 6.
Meanwhile, a complete shutdown is being observed across valley following a Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising of Hurriyat (g) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Hurriyat (m) chairman Mirwaiz Muhammad Umar Farooq and Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) valley-wide call against the “ill-treatment” meted out to the ailing and incarcerated JKLF chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik in Delhi.
