SRINAGAR: A machine operator was killed after the excavator he was operating for a road construction project skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district on Monday evening, officials said.
The accident occurred in the Gajpath Qillah area under the jurisdiction of Chanderkote Police Station. Police said information about the incident was received at around 8.30 pm, following which a rescue operation was launched by Ramban Police with the assistance of Civil Quick Response Team (QRT) volunteers.
According to police, the L and T excavator rolled down the gorge, trapping the operator beneath the heavily damaged machine.
After strenuous efforts, rescuers used a JCB machine to lift the wreckage and retrieve the body of the operator.
The deceased was identified as Akhtar Hussain, son of Hussain Khanday, a resident of Kahara in Doda district.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
