While directing her party’s ministers to expand the canvass of public outreach programme beyond their respective constituencies, Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti Wednesday asked her party functionaries to be an eye and ear of the coalition government by highlighting its achievements and performance before the people, sources told KNS.
Chairing an important meeting at her official residence at Gupkar here, the PDP president stressed upon the party functionaries to work tirelessly for peoples’ welfare and also make the state government functionaries and administration accountable and answerable for the larger public good.
Attended by all party functionaries including MLAs, MLCs, ministers, provincial, zonal and district presidents, the meeting also reviewed functioning and working of both party and the government. PDP’s two rebellious MPs – Tariq Hamid Karra and Muzaffar Hussain Baig – were conspicuously absent in the meeting. The meeting was also attended by Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
On a complaint by many party functionaries that the ministers were not attending to them on the important issues concerning people, sources said the PDP president while taking a strong note of it directed her party’s ministers to be proactive while addressing the genuine concerns and issues of the people including that of PDP functionaries and workers. She also directed her party’s ministers to enhance their public outreach programmes and extend it beyond their respective constituencies, so that issues and concerns of the people across the state are addressed as per their expectations. The ministers were also directed be in touch with people on the ground.
Sources added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to J&K on November 5 was also discussed in the meeting.
While announcing that she will start the party’s membership drive soon across the state, the PDP president underlined the need for strengthening the party at the grassroots, said the sources. She said that a strong government was only possible if the party is strengthened right from the grassroots to the upper level.
Mehbooba also underlined a need to devise a vibrant and effective publicity strategy for the party, so that policies and programmes of both PDP and the coalition government reach to people. She also asked her party functionaries to highlight the achievements and performance of the coalition government before people, so that a right perspective about the functioning of the coalition government led by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed reaches people.
The meeting, as per the sources, was also addressed by the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed who also stressed on the need to strengthen party at the grassroots. He also echoed Mehbooba’s words by saying that the PDP leaders and workers have to gear up to highlight the achievements and functioning of the government.
Mufti according to sources asked the party functionaries and ministers to work tirelessly for peoples’ cause and come up to their expectations “so that PDP does not meet the same fate as met by others before us”.
