Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik was arrested while Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was placed under house arrest on Saturday, hours ahead of their scheduled press conference in Srinagar.

A JKLF spokesman said that a police party arrived at the Maisuma residence of Malik and arrested him. “Malik Sahab was lodged at Kothibagh police station,” he said.

A spokesman of Hurriyat (M) said the Mirwaiz was placed under detention at his Nigeen residence.

Joint Resistance Leadership – a conglomerate of separatist groups headed by Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and Yasin Malik – had announced that they would address a press conference at a hotel in Srinagar today.

The announcement was made on Thursday after a joint meeting among the three leaders at the Hyderpora residence of Hurriyat (G) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
