SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir police in North Kashmir’s Sopore arrested a man for allegedly extorting Rs 95,000 from a local resident by falsely claiming connections with police officials and promising help in a pending case.
“Sopore Police have registered a case against Shahzad Ahmad Dar, son of Late Mohammad Ramzan Dar, a resident of Dangerpora Sopore, for taking money from a local by falsely claiming close links with the police and offering undue help in a police matter,” police said in a statement.
The accused allegedly threatened the victim and collected Rs 95,000 on false assurances of resolving the issue. “An FIR (No. 134/2025) has been registered at Police Station Sopore under relevant provisions of law, and an investigation is underway. The police have advised the public not to fall prey to such individuals. “Police action shall always remain within the bounds of law, and any person indulging in such unlawful activities will face strict legal consequences,” the statement said.
Anyone facing threats or extortion in the name of police is urged to report the matter at the nearest police station or at the District Police Office, Sopore. (JKNS)
