SRINAGAR: The Counter-Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) has apprehended a man for impersonating a senior officer of the Jammu and Kashmir Police by using the officer’s photograph as his WhatsApp display picture.
“CIK had received credible input that a man, identified as Barkat Ali Parray, son of Ghulam Mohammad Parray, a resident of Sheltang, Srinagar, was impersonating a senior officer. He had used the photograph of the SSP CIK as his WhatsApp profile picture and was allegedly threatening people,” reads a statement.
The statement said that acting on digital leads, the CIK apprehended the suspect from Jahangir Chowk, Srinagar. Upon checking his mobile phone, it was confirmed that he was using the SSP’s photo as his WhatsApp profile image.
“Preliminary verification revealed that the suspect had downloaded the SSP’s photograph from the internet and used it to falsely portray himself as a police officer,” the statement said.
Further verification showed that the individual had been involved in online gambling on platforms such as ‘Aviator’ and ‘777’ for the past year. He had also made advance payments on the ‘777 Gambling Platform’.
“During questioning, it emerged that the suspect misused the SSP’s profile picture to threaten organisers of the ‘777 Gambling Platform’ in an attempt to recover his advance payment. Further verification and analysis of his digital devices are underway to determine whether he has any involvement in other anti-social or anti-national activities,” the statement added. (KNO)
