SRINAGAR: Security forces on Saturday launched a search operation in over a dozen villages near the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, officials said.

The collaborative effort between the Army and police is centred in the Gursai region of the Mendhar subdivision. This operation is part of an escalated security measure in the bordering villages in anticipation of Independence Day.

Numerous villages, including Salwah, Sarooti, Gursai Top, Sanai, Keri Kanga, and Terkhara, were encircled by security forces who then commenced a search operation. As of the latest updates, the operation is still ongoing.

In light of the upcoming August 15 Independence Day celebrations, security has been heightened throughout the Jammu region to counter any potential efforts to disrupt the festivities.

On August 9, Mukesh Singh, the Additional Director General of Police for the Jammu Zone, presided over a joint security meeting in Jammu. During the meeting, he called for proactive “offensive operations,” particularly in the Rajouri-Poonch and Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban areas, with the aim of preventing possible terror attacks.

Furthermore, security agencies were instructed to maintain a heightened state of vigilance and reinforce both border security and the highway network.
