MeT Forecasts Heavy Rain, Flash Flood Risk Across Jammu Kashmir

   

SRINAGAR: The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has forecast a fresh spell of rain and thundershowers across Jammu and Kashmir from July 28, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, flash floods, landslides and mudslides in vulnerable areas over the coming days.

Director of the Meteorological Centre, Mukhtar Ahmad, said light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected at most places across the Union Territory between July 28 and July 31. He said a few districts, particularly in the Jammu division, are likely to witness brief but intense heavy showers, with peak weather activity expected on July 30 and 31.

According to the forecast, Udhampur and adjoining areas are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, especially during late night, morning and afternoon-evening hours.

For July 27, the department predicted rain and thundershowers at many places towards late afternoon and evening, followed by an improvement in weather conditions.

The MeT Centre said Kashmir division is likely to witness a few spells of light to moderate rain at most places from July 28 to 31, with isolated districts experiencing brief intense showers during the early morning and late afternoon or evening.

The Jammu division is expected to receive more intense rainfall during the same period, with heavy rain, torrential downpours and brief intense showers likely in a few districts.

The weather is expected to remain unsettled on August 1 and 2, with one or two spells of rain and thundershowers at many places. Similar conditions are forecast for August 3 and 4, with the possibility of heavy rain, torrential downpours and intense showers in parts of the Jammu division.

The MeT Department warned that heavy rainfall between July 28 and 31 could trigger flash floods, landslides and mudslides in vulnerable areas. It advised residents, tourists, travellers and transporters to follow official advisories and avoid vulnerable locations during the forecast period.
