SRINAGAR: Kashmir witnessed a mild earthquake early Saturday morning at around 5:45 am. It woke up people in their beds sending them quickly rushing them out.

The jolt was mild and minor and its impact was felt for few seconds.

Met officials said it measured 4.5 on the Richter scale and its intensity was moderate. They said the coordinates worked out suggest it took place at latitude of 35.0 degrees north and longitude 74.4 degrees east with epicentre in a depth of 150km.

No loss of life or property was reported from anywhere. However, it created a scare because talk of a “big earthquake” has remained part of the calamity discourse for a long time in Kashmir. Kashmir witnessed the worst earthquake in October 2005 that destroyed most of Uri and Karnah.
