Police on Sunday claimed to have killed a militant in a shootout in Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

A police spokesperson in a statement said that today in the afternoon hours, a group of militants while moving through Handwara was intercepted by a naka party near Chattipora in the jurisdiction of Police Station Handwara which led to a brief exchange of gunfire.

“Consequently one militant got killed in the exchange of fire. The identity of the slain militant is being ascertained. Arms and ammunition were also recovered from the slain militant,” said Police spokesman in a statement.

“The area has been cordoned off and searches are going on in the area,” the spokesman said.
