An unidentified militant was killed in a gunfight with government forces in Batpora village of Magam forest area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, said police.

A police spokesman in a statement said: “Pursuing credible leads regarding the presence of militants in Batapora village of Magam area in District Handwara, a joint patrol of the security forces today in the afternoon hours launched searches in the area.”

“During the searches, a hiding militant fired on the search party. The fire was retaliated and in the ensuing encounter, the militant was successfully eliminated by the joint patrol. No collateral damage was witnessed during the encounter,” the spokesman said.

“On the basis of the incriminating materials recovered, the killed militant is learnt to be a foreigner (Pakistani national) and was affiliated to the proscribed militant outfit LeT,” said police spokesman.

“Some arms and ammunition were also recovered from the encounter site,” he said.

Police has registered a case and investigation has been initiated in the instant matter.
