SRINAGAR

A high alert was sounded in the summer capital Srinagar on Tuesday after police reportedly received inputs about the presence of militants. Reliable sources told CNS that police received inputs that two to three militants donning police uniform were roaming in Srinagar city.

Reports said soon after receiving inputs policemen and paramilitary CRPF troopers were deployed in every nook and corner of the city to prevent any untoward incident.

Police went for random checking and frisking in the parts of the city especially the uptown areas including Lal Chowk, Hari Singh Sigh Street, Batmaloo, Khralkhud, Maisuma, GPO road, Iqbal Park and Dalgate where civilians were being made to stand in queues and asked to produce identity cards.

Police sources told CNS that close circuit television cameras were used for surveillance in different areas of the city to monitor the movement of the people.

When contacted a top police official said that, “checking is a routine matter to maintain peace and order in the city.” The official did not confirm the reports of presence of militants in Srinagar city and said it is not true.

Pertinently, a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer was killed and another paramilitary personnel injured when suspected militant opened fire on their patrol at Nowgam Bypass a fortnight ago
