Militants killed in Sopore identified, belonged to HM

Police on Thursday identified the two militants killed in Sopore firefight as Aijaz Ahmad Mir of Brath Kalan and Basharat Ahmad Sheikh of Bomai Sopore.

Police sources said that both the militants belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen and the bodies of both have been handed over to their families.

A police official said that the duo was killed in an encounter with the joint team of 22 Rashtriya Rifles, 92, 177 and 179 battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

Meanwhile, reports said that people have started marching towards the twin villages. Both the villages are located within a radius of 2 killometres.

To prevent protests, mobile phone services have been blocked and schools and colleges have been closed in Sopore area, a police officer said.

Internet services were suspended across Kashmir after Sabzar Ahmad Bhat, who succeeded Burhan Wani, was killed in Tral on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Police sources claimed that soon after a grenade was hurled on the Sopore police station yesterday, the thrower was caught on a CCTV camera. After establishing his identity, the police reached to a house in Nathipora village where the two militants were hiding.

The police claimed that the slain militants were behind yesterday’s grenade attack on police station in Sopore in which four policemen were injured.
