Mirwaiz Addressing Press ConferenceMirwaiz Umar Farooq, Chairman Hurriyat Conference (M) on Sunday termed BJP more effective vis-à-vis resolution of Kashmir issue than the Congress led UPA in the centre.

According to KNS correspondent, talking to media persons on the sidelines of a seminar organized by Hurriyat (M) at its headquarter in Rajbagh, the Mirwaiz remarked that the BJP had shown some inclination and there was some movement forward aimed at addressing the long pending Kashmir issue.

“It was during the tenure of Mr Atal Behrai Vajpayee as the prime minister of India that he had declared Kashmir a humane issued which should be addressed within the ambit of humanity,” the Mirwaiz told reporters.

Commenting on Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s recent remarks that India and Pakistan at one point were close to resolve Kashmir issue, Mirwaiz said that the strong political will is needed so that this long pending problem is resolved. “The Kashmir’s leadership will support any dialogue process aimed at the Kashmir resolution in accordance to the aspirations of the people of Kashmir.”

Welcoming the recent overtures shown by India and Pakistan including that of the back channel initiatives taken by the two countries, the Mirwaiz said any dialogue which sans sincerity cannot reach to its logical conclusion.  “The dialogue should be meaningful and both the countries need to show sincerity in mitigating the sufferings of the people of Kashmir,” he demanded.

He said Kashmir issue should not be in anyway co-related with elections and the issue needs to be addressed rising above the electoral politics. “Kashmir issue is a national issue for both India and Pakistan so the same cannot be left lingering for too long. It is not in the interests of either of the countries or for that matter, the peace in South Asia will remain elusive till Kashmir issue is resolved,” the Hurriyat (M) chairman averred.

Putting a question mark on the relevance of United Nations, the Mirwaiz said the world body has failed people of Kashmir vis-à-vis their long pending political problem. He remarked that Hurriyat is willing to explore other options in light of Hurriyat Constitution besides pursuing the UN intervention for the resolution of Kashmir issue.

The Hurriyat (M) Chairman took exception to what he called UN ‘silence’ on the resolutions passed by its security council on Kashmir saying that the world body has ‘failed’ to shoulder its responsibilities vis-à-vis resolution of Kashmir issue.

The UN resolutions provide a legal basis for the ‘Kashmir dispute’, the Mirwaiz said, adding that January 5 is the day when the promises were made to the people of Kashmir by the world body. “On this day we appeal the world community to keep its promises made to the people of Kashmir about their birth right.” He said it is unfortunate and condemnable that the worst human rights violations inflicted on the people of the region.

Terming state government’s five years functioning a ‘hoax’ Mirwaiz asked why the government has remained silent about ‘human right violations, oppression suppression, killings and draconian laws’ in highlights of its achievements. “The recent few inches of snowfall has deflated the claims made by the state government about its administrative effectiveness which was highlighted through paid advertisements in the local press,” he added.

He ridiculed the present dispensation for proving ‘a disaster in governance besides gagging the voices of dissent and turning the state into a police state’. Mirwaiz alleged the significance of the legislative assembly in the state has been rendered ‘symbolic’ as all the decisions according to him are being taken by the army commanders.

On organizational discipline within his amalgam of separatist parties, the Hurriyat (M) Chairman said attempts of indiscipline will be intolerable for him. “We don’t point fingers on anyone. We also don’t label anybody as a traitor. If we follow the organizational discipline in letter and spirit, I am sure we will achieve our goal,” he added.

He said the pro-India mainstream political parties play with sentiments of the Kashmiri people and they believe in vote bank politics. “It is these mainstream political parties which have turned Jammu and Kashmir into a political state,” Mirwaiz remarked.
