SRINAGAR: Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Moulvi Mohammad Umar Farooq on Wednesday expressed deep anguish over the reported deaths of civilians and police personnel in the continuing unrest across the Line of Control (LoC), particularly in Rawalakot and Poonch, and urged the Government of Pakistan, local authorities and protesters to restore peace through dialogue.

In a post on X, Mirwaiz said he was “deeply saddened and pained” by reports of loss of life and extended his condolences to the bereaved families and all those affected by the violence.

He also voiced concern over the ongoing debate surrounding the representation and constitutional and political status of a large number of Kashmiri State Subjects residing in Pakistan, saying issues relating to identity, political rights and representation required sensitivity, dialogue and broad public confidence.

Mirwaiz said the legitimacy of any system of governance rested on the consent, trust and confidence of the people it serves, adding that developments across the LoC deeply affect people throughout Jammu and Kashmir because of their shared social, cultural and family ties.

Recalling his family’s longstanding historical association with communities across Jammu and Kashmir, including those on the other side of the LoC, he said he had received expressions of anguish and distress from people affected by the unrest.

He appealed to the Government of Pakistan and the local authorities to prioritise dialogue, restraint and engagement, and resolve differences through consultation rather than confrontation while ensuring respect for human rights and the sanctity of human life.

Mirwaiz also appealed to the protesting parties to exercise wisdom and responsibility and work towards restoring peace and public confidence at the earliest.
