The Jammu and Kashmir police on Wednesday arrested Jammu and Kashmir Hurriyat Conference (m) chairperson Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairperson Muhammad Yasin Malik from Abi Guzar area of Srinagar.

The duo had earlier announced that they will lead a protest march upto Lal Chowk and hold a sit-in there against “government onslaught” on the people in kashmir particularly southern Kashmir district and the plight of Kashmiri prisoners in jails.

Amid massive pro-Pakistan, anti-India and pro-freedom slogans, the duo along with dozens of resistance activists tried to proceed towards Lal Chowk. However, a huge contingent of police stopped them and bundled them into a police vehicle.

Earlier, the resistance leaders called for a complete shutdown on November 27.

“We appeal for complete shutdown on Nov 27 to show solidarity with the Kashmiri Prisoners languishing in different jails,” Mirwaiz said addressing a press conference ahead of the protest march and subsequent arrest.
