To stop Hurriyat (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq from marching towards Shopian, police on Friday put him under house arrest and did not allow him to come out of his residence at Nigeen.

“Mirwaiz has been put under house arrest and a large contingent of police and CRPF has cordoned off the area around his residence, media advisor to Mirwaiz, Shahid-ul-Islam informed Kashmir Life.

He added that other leaders of Hurriyat like Prof Abdul Gani Bhat, Bilal Gani Lone, Moulana Abbas Ansari and Agha Syed Hassan have also been put under house arrest while as many others have been arrested and detained in different police stations.

Hurriyat (M) has called for ‘Shopian Challo’ today to show solidarity with the people of Shopian who are undergoing strict curfew since September 7.

Five persons were killed in CRPF firing in Shopian in two different incidents.

Shahid-ul-Islam added that he himself was put under house arrest as he tried to step out to reach Hurriyat head office in Rajbagh.

Meanwhile hundreds of people gathered near Jamia Masjid Srinagar to protest against the house arresting of Mirwaiz. The protesters started raising anti-India and pro-freedom slogans and as they reached near Naqashband Sahab, police resorted to tear gas shelling to disperse the marchers.
