SRINAGAR: The newly elected MLAs of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly will take their oath on Monday, administered by MLA Eidgah, Mubarak Gul, who was appointed as pro tem speaker by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Friday.
The LG appointed Mubarak Gul, a six-time MLA, as pro tem speaker of the Assembly to administer the oath to the newly elected MLAs. The oath-taking ceremony will be held at the Legislative Assembly complex on Monday at 2:00 PM.
The pro tem speaker is a temporary appointment to oversee proceedings until a full-time speaker is elected by the MLAs.
This marks the first time that MLAs of Jammu & Kashmir will take an oath of allegiance to the Constitution of India. Before the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganisation of JK, MLAs in the erstwhile state swore allegiance to the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir.
Taking the oath will enable the MLAs to participate in House proceedings.
The five-year term of the JK Assembly will commence on October 21, the date of the first sitting of the House.
As per Section 17 of the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act, the Legislative Assembly shall continue for five years from the date appointed for its first meeting.
Prior to the 2019 constitutional changes, the term of the J&K Legislative Assembly was six years, instead of five—(*KNO*).
