SRINAGAR: A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Egypt’s northeastern Ismailia province early on Monday, prompting authorities to activate emergency measures, although there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
According to Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the earthquake occurred at 3 a.m. local time (0000 GMT) at a depth of 5.47 kilometres.
The tremor was felt across several Egyptian cities, including the capital, Cairo, local media reported.
The Egyptian Red Crescent said it had not received any reports of injuries or property damage following the quake. It advised residents to avoid old or visibly cracked buildings as a precaution.
Egypt’s Health Ministry activated its emergency response plan and placed hospitals across the affected areas on maximum alert to deal with any potential emergencies.
Authorities were continuing to monitor the situation, with no further incidents reported immediately after the earthquake.
