Srinagar: In the wake of heightened security measures ahead of the inauguration of 9.28 Km Chenani-Nashri tunnel by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, 295 kilometer long Jammu-Srinagar highway has been completely closed for traffic till Sunday 6pm.

An official at the traffic control Room (TCR) Jammu as well as Ramban told Kashmir Life that strict instructions have been issued by IG (Traffic) Jagjit Kumar not to allow any vehicle either from Jammu to Srinagar or vice-versa from 6 AM to 6 PM on Sunday.

“No movement of private vehicles including two wheelers would be allowed from Jammu. Even Udhampur, Chenani, Batote, Ramban, Banihal, Doda, Bhaderwah, Kishtwar bound vehicles would not be allowed,” said the official.

Similar directions have been issued for Jammu bound vehicles from Srinagar. “Highway has been completely shut due to the security reasons,” said the official.

Regarding the Katra bound vehicles; the official said that they would be allowed. “Since they would in no away impact the security of the PM, all Reasi and Katra bound vehicles coming from Jammu only would be allowed to move,” the official said.

On being asked, why all the top officials of traffic police have switched off their mobiles, he said “To avoid being forced to allow some vehicles to pass.”
