Terming as “political gimmick” the letter of former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Syeed written to the Prime Minister demanding return of mortal remains of Mohammad Afzal Guru, National Conference (NC) leader Ali Muhammad Sagar Wednesday said Mufti wrote the letter after realizing that the Chief Minister has demanded return of the body.

“Omar Sahab has made it clear that he had written a letter and later met the PM on 19th February with the demand for return of mortal remains of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat. Mufti Sahab has written the letter after realizing the efforts already made by Omar Sahab. It could be a political gimmick”, NC senior leader Ali Mohammad Sagar told KNS.

When asked whether NC welcomes the step taken by Mufti, if it supports the initiative already taken by Chief Minister, “Any party can come forward and appreciate the step taken by CM”, he replied.

Pertinently, reacting to the letter of PDP patron Mufti Muhammad Syeed addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh where he has demanded return of Muhammad Afzal Guru’s body to his family, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah broke silence over the issue on Tuesday evening claiming that he had already taken up the issue with the PM.

“I had hoped to avoid playing politics with the body of Afzal Guru but that seems to be impossible to avoid with the Mufti Sayeed letter now. I had written to the PM on the 19th of this month asking for the return of the bodies of both Afzal Guru & Maqbool Bhatt to their families”, Omar had written on micro blogging website Twitter.
