Police recovered a corpse outside Kupwara district hospital Tuesday morning. He was later identified as the same person who had allegedly fled from police custody.

Details revealed that Nazir Ahmad, a resident of Munigah Hayhama, was in police custody and was admitted to hospital after he complained of chest pain. It was during his hospital stay that he gave a slip to police. Later, his body was recovered outside the hospital on Tuesday.

However, Nazir’s relatives protest alleging he was tortured and was not a murderer. Reports quoting Zurhama Sarpanch Ghulam Ahmad Sheikh said they want police to investigate the matter or they will seek help from the court.

Rahul Malik, Kupwara SP was quoted saying that they had brought Nazir from Punjab while investigating a murder case. During the custody he complained of pain and was sent to hospital where from he fled and was later recovered dead.

In a brief statement police said issued in Srinagar that Nazir Mughal son of Abdul Reman and adopted by Bahadur Khan of Gujjarpati (Zirhama) was shifted to hospital on February 10. He was arrested in FIR 76/2014 under section 364,302/ RPC registered in police station Trehgam. Within a few hours in hospital, it said, Nazir went to bathroom and did not return. Tuesday morning, his body was recovered from the premises of the hospital. “Magisterial inquest proceedings has been initiated as per law strictly as per NHRS guidelines,” police said in the statement.
