Police have detained at least five persons in connection with the murder of an engineering student from Peerbagh Srinagar whose mutilated body had been recovered near Railway Track Humhama on Thursday.

The murder of Owais Bashir Malik had sparked violent protest while police had registered a murder case soon after the recovery of the body to pacify the sentiments of the protesters.

Deputy Inspector General Police for Central Kashmir Ghulam Hasan Bhat told CNS that a Special Investigation Team headed by SDPO Magam has already been constituted to investigate the killing. “The team has got some important leads and on the basis of those leads five persons have been detained. We have been questioning them and hopefully we are expected to crack this case within a short span of time,” he said.

“The police have been talking to the relatives, friends, and neighbours of the deceased youth and more arrests are expected in this case. Prima facie it appears it is a social crime and the youth have been tortured to death by those who were known to him.” Bhat said adding that he is personally in touch with the family of the deceased youth.
