When the state government suggested RBI to appoint Mushtaq Ahmad as the chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the bank that it owns,it fetched J&K bank its first boss who is from the organization itself. Ahmad retired from the bank as Executive Director in February 2008.

A resident of Uri, Ahmad did his graduation from Degree College Baramulla in 1971. He was one of the 10 probationary officers of the bank in 1972. His first major assignment was establishing the Uri branch of the bank in 1975.

In his 36 years of stint in the bank he headed a varied set of activities that included credit, risk management, strategy and business development, assets & liability management, human resource development, investments, treasury, forex operations, international banking and insurance.

As the government’s sudden unease with Dr Haseeb Drabu led to his unceremonious ouster, Mushtaq got a chance to become the boss of perhaps the only organization that the J&K state can boast of.
