On Friday, March 28, residents, commuters, and civic organisations staged a large demonstration at Masjid Market, voicing frustration over the worsening traffic situation. Protesters argued that the diversion, enforced for the past month, has resulted in crippling gridlocks, disrupted daily routines, and negatively impacted businesses. They demanded an immediate end to the policy and long-term infrastructure improvements to ease congestion.

The demonstration prompted a high-level meeting between public representatives and the administration, including officials from the Revenue and Police Departments and Traffic authorities. After discussions, it was decided that the diversion through Maitra onto Jula Bridge will cease after Eid, with only emergency services permitted. A follow-up meeting will be held post-Eid to develop a sustainable solution.

Protesters also raised concerns over alleged corruption in infrastructure projects and the slow progress of the area’s only proposed bridge. They called for an expedited construction timeline, questioning why crucial road projects remain incomplete despite significant public expenditure.

With the protest temporarily called off, residents now await further action from the authorities, warning that they will resume demonstrations if a permanent resolution is not reached.
