National Conference leader and Higher Education Minister, Mohammad Akbar Lone had to leave the party workers election meeting midway in a Bandipora village, as clashes hit the area against the minister’s visit on Tuesday. The angry people later ransacked the house of a local National Conference worker.

Reports reaching Srinagar said that Lone had come to Sudnara, village some 3 Kms from Hajin to attend an election campaign meeting with his party workers.

Sources said that security was beefed up in view of the minister’s visit since morning and the protesting people engaged them in ding dong battles for a long however Lone succeeded in reaching Sudnara.

Lone presided over a meeting of his party workers in the residence of a senior party worker, Ali Muhammad Sheikh. They added that Lone had to leave the meeting midway as the clashes intensified.

Sources said that protesting mob later attacked the residence of Shiekh and ransacked it. Police sources however said that the protesters were chased away.

Sources said that police used tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters. They said that 2 persons were injured in the clashes and police arrested one of protesters.

Sources said that further deployment has been made in the area and the situation was tense.
