Suspected militants shot dead a village panch in a South Kashmir village at Wanpoh-Qoimuh in Kulgam district on Thursday evening, GNS reported.
He has been identified as Gul Muhammad Bhat, 72, s/o Abdul Gani Bhat, of Wanpoh, Kulgam.
Sources said that the Panchayat representative belonged to ruling coalition partner National Conference.
They added that militants fired on Bhat injuring him critically near a shop in Wanpoh. Bhat was being shifted to SMHS Srinagar when he succumbed to his injuries.
“He had received two bullets in his chest and due to the gravity of the injury we referred him to Srinagar”, a doctor, who attended, Gul said.
Police spokesperson confirmed the incident and said, “The injured panch has been shifted to a Srinagar hospital.”
