SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) on Wednesday held a protest in Srinagar demanding that the BJP-led Union Government fulfil its commitments on restoration of statehood and constitutional guarantees for Jammu and Kashmir.
NC workers marched towards the BJP headquarters carrying placards and raising slogans in support of the party’s demands. The demonstration was aimed at reminding the BJP-led central leadership of assurances made to Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.
NC chief spokesperson and MLA Tanvir Sadiq said the protest was directed at the BJP leadership in Delhi and was not against the party’s local unit in Jammu and Kashmir.
“We only want to remind the BJP leadership in Delhi that the promises you made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir must be fulfilled. The time has now come,” Sadiq told reporters on the sidelines of the protest.
He said the peaceful demonstration was intended to convey the party’s demands to the Prime Minister and the central leadership, including commitments made before the Supreme Court.
Among the NC’s demands are restoration of statehood, constitutional safeguards and measures concerning reservation and employment opportunities for the youth of Jammu and Kashmir.
Sadiq also raised concerns over delays in the rationalisation of posts, saying employment-related issues affecting young people required attention.
“We are here for all the rights and the mandate given by the people of Jammu and Kashmir. That mandate must be respected,” he said.
