SRINAGAR: The death toll from Nepal’s devastating flash floods has crossed 900, while thousands remain missing as search and rescue operations entered their sixth day, CNN reported.
The disaster struck on August 26 after a glacial collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border triggered a massive flow of water and debris, devastating several districts and causing widespread damage to settlements and infrastructure.
According to the Deccan Herald, the official death toll has reached 903, while 4,247 people remain missing. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) said bodies had been recovered from all eight affected districts as rescue teams continued efforts to trace survivors and recover the dead.
The Hindustan Times reported that more than 900 workers associated with hydropower projects were believed to be trapped inside tunnels at several sites. Rescue teams from India, China and the Republic of Korea have joined local agencies in efforts to reach those stranded, while flood warnings remain in place for downstream districts.
According to The Hindu, the disaster was triggered by a glacial collapse and a massive rockfall that registered as a magnitude 5.2 seismic event. The resulting surge swept through river valleys, damaging infrastructure and displacing thousands of people.
The newspaper also reported that Nepal’s disaster authorities said hundreds of foreign nationals were among those missing, with international rescue teams assisting the ongoing operation.
Official figures showed that Chitwan, Nawalparasi East and Nawalparasi West recorded the highest number of fatalities. The NDRRMA said 85 security personnel and 320 foreign nationals were among those still missing, highlighting the scale of the disaster.
Search, rescue and relief operations remain underway across the affected regions as authorities continue efforts to locate survivors, recover bodies and reach communities cut off by the floods.
