SRINAGAR: The Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) has said consumers cannot be compelled to purchase additional cables for smart meter installation, following an allegation by Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference president and Handwara MLA Sajad Lone that households were being asked to pay Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000 for the purpose.
Lone had alleged that the additional expense was placing a financial burden on poorer households.
In response, KPDCL said its smart metering project provides the cables required for installation, including extra lengths wherever technically necessary.
The corporation clarified that, under applicable electricity regulations, consumers remain responsible for their existing service lines. However, replacing or upgrading those cables is optional and cannot be imposed as a prerequisite for smart meter installation.
“No consumer should be compelled to purchase cables or incur unnecessary expenses for smart meter installation,” KPDCL said in a statement.
The corporation urged consumers to report any instances of being forced to purchase cables or bear unnecessary costs to the concerned authorities for appropriate action.
