SRINAGAR: Taking a firm stance on road safety, the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Sopore has issued a directive to petrol station owners, making it clear that riders without crash helmets will be denied fuel.
ADC SA Raina convened a meeting with petrol filling station owners, stressing the critical role they play in reinforcing helmet usage and overall road safety. Raina emphasised the shared responsibility of both the administration and citizens in ensuring the well-being of the community.
“Ensuring the safety of our citizens is of paramount importance, and wearing helmets is a simple yet effective practice that significantly reduces the severity of head injuries in accidents—posing risks to pedestrians as well,” Raina said.
The ADC’s directive underscores the seriousness of the issue, linking it directly to the protection of lives on the road. Raina’s measure aims to instil a sense of responsibility among two-wheeler riders, promoting the use of crash helmets as a fundamental safety practice.
In addition to the fuel restriction, Raina outlined other measures to enhance safety at petrol stations. Petrol station owners were directed to install CCTV surveillance cameras to monitor activities. The directive also emphasized the importance of night fuelling to prevent inconvenience to commuters.
Furthermore, Raina mandated the provision of washroom facilities at all petrol stations within the jurisdiction. In a bid to enhance customer service, petrol stations were given a three-day deadline to make air compressor facilities available. (KNO)
Appreciable step by ADC regarding road safety. Here in Srinagar we see two pillion riders often and mostly girl students do it that too without helmets by main rider. Last time I requested RTO Kashmir Syed Shahnawaz Bukhari Sb to put in place stringent rule making crash helmet mandatory for only one pillion rider. Two pillion riders IIS already illegal and illogical. Hope he takes the step immediately to ensure that precious human lives are safeguarded.
