Friday Prayers at the Jamia Masjid were rarely stopped in the turbulent decades of militancy. BILAL BHADUR

Authorities disallowed Friday congregational prayers in historic Jamia Masjid in Old City today.

Valley’s chief cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was placed under house detention since he returned from New Delhi, his secretary said. He had invited Syed Ali Geelani and Muhammad Yasin Malik for a joint protest program today after Friday prayers.

However, authorities put in place severe restrictions today as a “precautionary measure”.

“Mirwaiz Umar was detained by police at his home while no prayers were allowed in Jamia Masjid,” secretary of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq told Kashmir Life.
