SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday condemned the recent killings in South Kashmir, saying there was no religious justification for targeting innocent people and that such attacks must not recur.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the JK Open 2026 at the Royal Springs Golf Course in Srinagar, Abdullah said the victims were innocent and their killings were deeply regrettable.
“The people who were killed were innocent. It is a very sad incident and it should never have happened. No religion allows the killing of innocent people. No matter how strongly such acts are condemned, words will always fall short,” the Chief Minister said.
Abdullah said the responsibility now rested with the security agencies to ensure that similar incidents were prevented in the future.
“The people responsible for maintaining security are expected to ensure that such attacks do not happen again,” he said.
His remarks came after two fatal attacks in South Kashmir within 10 days.
On July 22, militants shot dead police Head Constable Aashiq Hussain Qureshi near Lal Chowk in Anantnag.
On July 31, suspected militants opened fire on two migrant workers from Chhattisgarh at a brick kiln in the Kelam area of Kulgam district. The two workers, identified as Deepak Ratray and Bopinder, later succumbed to their injuries.
