Eyewitnesses told CNS that a party of Special Operations Group personnel during a night raid, arrested Tariq Ahmed Dar son of Abdul Ahad, a 12th class student from Cheirkot area of Lolab Valley.

His arrest sparked violent protest and spontaneous shutdown. The protesters blocked the road for traffic and clashed with the police. Police resorted to teargas shelling to disperse the protesters. Several persons including the two sisters of the arrested youth were injured during police action.

All the shops and business establishment remained closed and traffic was off the roads.

“Tariq is neither a stone-pelter nor affiliated with any militant organization. We fail to understand why he has been arrested,” said the sister of Tariq Ahmed.

When contacted SP Kupwara, Ajaz Ahmed said Tariq had recently thrashed a policeman during stone-pelting incident. “He is a trouble-monger in the area and has been arrested in connection with different stone-pelting incidents.”
