Two persons including a non-local drowned in two separate incidents at Machowa, Srinagar and Sopore areas on Thursday.

Reports said that two persons while taking a bath at a flood channel of Doodganga river near a railway bridge in Machowa area of Srinagar outskirts today late in the afternoon.

In the meantime, one among the two persons drowned in the flood channel, his associate raised the alarm which caught the attention of the nearby locals who rushed to the spot, they said.

Among the locals, a volunteer youth Sahil Mehraj son of Mehrajid Wani jumped into the river and after hectic efforts managed to retrieve the body of the youth, they said.

A police officer also confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Faheem Ahmad Sheikh son Zahoor Ahmad Sheikh of Mini-Colony Chanapora.

The body of Faheem, a 12th class student, was later handed over to the family for last rites after conducting all legal medico formalities, the officer said.

In another separate incident, a non-local youth drowned in river Jehlum at Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district today late in the afternoon.

A police officer said that the non-local drowned in the river while he was bathing.

He identified the drowned as Zaffar Ahmad of Udhampur.

He said that a rescue operation was immediately launched to retrieve the body. (GNS)
