Srinagar

Government on Saturday imposed restrictions in Srinagar parts to foil protests against the killing of a youth in downtown Srinagar.

“Restrictions under Section 144 have been imposed to maintain law and order in areas falling under the jurisdiction of Khanyar, Nowhatta, M.R. Gunj, Safakadal, Kralkhud and Maisuma police stations,” a senior police officer said.

Kaiser Bhat, 21, was crushed down by the Central Reserve Police Force vehicle in the old city area of Nowhatta during protests on Friday.

Bhat was admitted to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), here. He succumbed to critical internal injuries early on Saturday.

All shops and business establishments are closed in the city. Authorities have erected barricades at several places to prevent any protests.

The call for the shutdown was given by the Joint Resistance Leaders comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik.
