Protests erupted in Nowhatta and adjoining areas of old city when police picked Asif Qazi from his shop, on pretext of stone pelting related case.

“Police picked Asif from his shop,” said a shopkeeper in vicinity of Asif’s shop.

When the news of Asif’s arrest spread, shopkeepers pulled their shutters down and traffic in area went off the road. The shopkeepers staged a dharna to protest the arrest.

Protesters blocked the roads which led to diversion of traffic. The protesters also engaged police in stone pelting.  Police while retaliating resorted to cane charge and tear gas shelling.

The arrest of Asif is believed to be one of the many arrests police is making to curb the stone pelting.

According to locals, police has assured his release, but till last reports came he was still in custody.
