SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday assured full government support for the preservation and expansion of Kashmir’s globally recognised cricket bat industry, announcing measures to address long-pending issues related to willow plantations, infrastructure, power supply and ease of doing business.
During his visit to the Hallamulla Sangam Industrial Estate in Anantnag, the Chief Minister met members of the Cricket Bat Manufacturers Association and said safeguarding traditional industries was as important as attracting new investments.
He described the cricket bat industry as one of Jammu and Kashmir’s unique strengths, supported by locally available willow, skilled craftsmen and an established domestic and international market.
Addressing concerns over shrinking willow resources, Omar said the government would promote scientific plantation and systematic replantation of willow trees to ensure a sustainable supply of raw material. He also said authorities would examine improved willow varieties and strengthen monitoring to curb the illegal movement of willow clefts.
The Chief Minister further announced that proposals for improving electricity supply to the industrial estate would be taken up with the Power Development Department. He also assured better medical facilities for workers, establishment of a Fire and Emergency Services unit and simplification of procedural requirements for the industry.
Later, Omar visited a cricket bat manufacturing unit where he interacted with workers and artisans, appreciating their craftsmanship and reiterating the government’s commitment to strengthening the sector through policy support and improved infrastructure.
