Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Friday arrived here after completing his two day visit to New Delhi where he discussed the prevailing situation with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the aftermath of Muhammad Afzal Guru’s hanging at Delhi’s Tihar Jail on February 9, reliable sources told KNS.

According to sources, Omar discussed in detail the overall security situation in the valley in wake of demands for return of body of Guru. “The situation emanating out of the hanging and its fallout on overall political and security situation was the main agenda of the meeting. The Chief Minister has apprised the Prime Minister about the steps taken by the state government in controlling the law and order in the valley”, they added. They said the Chief Minister also called upon the Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Friday evening. An official spokesperson also confirmed the meeting. “Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Friday had a meeting with Union Minister for Home Affairs, Sushilkumar Shinde here and discussed matters relating to the recent developments in the state”, he said.

It is believed that the Omar has raised the issue of return of body of the parliament attack convict Afzal Guru with the central leadership. “They discussed the issue apart from its possible pros and cons in the state and outside”, said sources.

However, according to sources, the national leadership and other agencies have expressed unwillingness for return of the body in view of its possible fallout. “They fear returning the body might prompt other people and the family of Muhammad Maqbool Bhat to raise similar demands”, they said.

The Chief Minister, according to the sources, has discussed the situation in view of the Hurriyat Conference having made its one-point demand of return of the body and resolved to call for protest programme till return of the body.

Meanwhile, according to reliable sources, different security agencies in the state are also against returning the body of Guru to his family. They said the security and intelligence agencies have expressed their reservations over the proposal of returning Guru’s body to his family.

Meanwhile, sources in the state government said the Chief Minister will chair a meeting of the state cabinet in next few days to discuss issue apart from apprising the cabinet of what the central leadership had conveyed to him.
