In the backdrop of the situation emerging as a consequence of the Parliament attack convict Muhammad Afzal Guru’s hanging, state Congress President Prof Saif ud din Soz Friday met Prime Minster Dr Manmohan Singh in New Delhi.

KNS has learnt from reliable sources within the state congress that Soz discussed the overall situation in the state with the PM. They however declined to reveal whether the two leaders had a discussion on Afzal Guru’s hanging or the possibility of returning the body of Guru to his family.

Meanwhile, when contacted Prof Soz confirmed to KNS that he had met the Prime Minister, however, he refused to divulge the details of the meeting. When asked if he had raised the issue of Guru during the meet, Prof Soz said he had already made it clear that it was wrong not to ask Afzal Guru’s family to have a last meeting with him (Afzal Guru) before his execution.

Meanwhile congress sources told KNS that Soz had also met home Minister Sushil Kumar Shindee earlier today.

The meeting of Soz with the Prime Minister is seen with significance in view of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also having met the PM on Thursday. The prevailing situation in the valley in the backdrop of Guru’s hanging has remained on the edge with pressure groups both in Delhi and Srinagar raising voice over demands for returning of Guru’s body to his family.
