Holding ruling National Conference responsible for “prevailing uncertainty” in Jammu and Kashmir, opposition Peoples Democratic Party Chief Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday warned government of serious consequences if “policy of oppression” continues in the state.

Talking to KNS, Mehbooba Mufti accused Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of having failed to change the mindset of New Delhi over Kashmir.

“Government of India has a particular mindset regarding Jammu and Kashmir and it’s the duty of the Chief Minister to convince New Delhi to change it for the betterment of Kashmir but the present government has completely failed.”

She also questioned the “policy of oppression” by the ruling alliance in the aftermath of the recent killings in the state.

“Rubbing salt into the wound has remained the approach of this government,” Mehbooba said, questioning government over large sale arrests of youth, slapping Public Safety Act against them and subjecting them to different types of punishment for raising voice against “atrocities.”

“In 2010, 120 persons were killed and those who raised voice against the killings continue to be either behind bars or fighting their cases in various courts,” she said, adding, “Peaceful protests is a universal right, but in our state it invariably evokes brutal response from the state which has squeezed the space for political dissent and right to expression resulting in the hatred and anger against the entire system.”

Mehbooba, daughter of PDP patron Mufti Sayeed said that as a result of this policy, youth are again picking up the gun.

“If government does to end this policy forthwith, it will have dangerous consequences in future,” she said.

Referring to recent killing of four persons in Gool area of Ramban district, Mehbooba said, “The protest of people was natural given the desecration of Holy Quran but instead of taking action against responsible, bullets were showered on protesters, as a result of which four innocent persons got killed and dozens others injured.”

Stating that Omar has failed in discharging his duties as far as protecting the life, honour and dignity of people of Jammu and Kashmir was concerned, she said, “He has no moral or constitutional right to continue.”

Mehbooba termed as customary the Omar’s announcement of probes and appointment of Commission of Inquiries into tragic incidents in the Valley.

“Countless inquiries and Commissions were ordered by Omar Abdullah during his tenure but not a single security or police personnel has been punished.”

She also questioned the “failure” of Omar-led government in convincing the Congress in centre to engage with the separatists.

“When Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was successful in engaging separatist during BJP-led coalition in power, why has Omar failed in such an endeavor when congress led UPA is in power in centre?”
