One Drug Peddler Arrested, Two Others Convicted

   

SRINAGAR: Srinagar Police arrested a drug peddler and secured the conviction of two others in separate NDPS cases, reinforcing its zero-tolerance stance on drug trafficking in the region.

According to a police statement, a team from Police Station Shaltang apprehended Zubair Ahmed Sheikh, son of Gulzar Ahmed Sheikh and a resident of Lawaypora, during a checkpoint operation at Ranbirgarh. A significant quantity of heroin-like substance was recovered from his possession.

A case under FIR No. 39/2025 has been registered under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Police Station Shaltang, and an investigation is underway.

In a separate development, the Court of Special Judge (NDPS Cases), Srinagar, convicted two drug peddlers—Rafiq Ahmad Putoo of Saidakadal and Aqib Manzoor Bakhroo of Rainawari—following legal proceedings initiated by Srinagar Police.

The duo had been arrested in 2020 under FIR No. 110/2020 at Police Station Ram Munshi Bagh for possession of commercial quantities of Charas intended for distribution among local youth. The court found them guilty under sections 8, 20, and 29 of the NDPS Act.

Both convicts were sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 50,000 each. In default of payment, they will undergo an additional six months of simple imprisonment. The sentences will run concurrently.
